From the Secretary…

Many thanks to Maureen Capes, who helped me battle through the atrocious weather on the Saturday, to set up the cones course. We could hardly stay upright as it was blowing so hard and the rain showed us no mercy! The dressage earlier in the day didn't finish until 4.30pm, so we didn't have a lot of daylight time to get the arena cleared before setting out the course. I was very grateful for her help.
Amazingly the Day of the competition was reasonably fine, even a little warm when the sun was out! The heavens opened when James was doing the presentation, but apart from that, there were only a few short sharp showers up to then. The new surface was lovely to drive on, particularly noticeable that the small ponies managed very well.
You will have noticed that only a few drivers got close to the time. - Neil Edwards and Sue Johnson having the best scores.
When set up, the course is usually walked three times, but on this particular Saturday it was walked only once in pouring rain and strong wind and almost dark and we were soaked through and very cold! So I apologise for this and I'll try not to let this happen again!

From the Secretary…

What a day of contrasts it was on the first event of the New Year at Cricklands. Morning was calm, dry and even blue sky but as the day went on, the heavens opened, and how! The stewards were drowned rats by the end of the day (I know, I was one of them), and we felt very sorry for the competitors and ponies, who not only had to cope with heavy rain, but the going under hoof got very heavy too.
The last competitor of the day was Ainslie driving unicorn for the first time, with Leo and Woody and Jane's Smarty Pants. Apparently they had only had about 40 minutes together before entering the dressage and from what I could see (through the pouring rain) was that they made a pretty good show of it. Leo looked rather reluctant to do a 5 second halt and just wanted to back into the rain, and who could blame him! They then went on to do a fantastic clear in the cones and apart from a last minute change of direction from their driver, which resulted in the demolition of a gate (the ponies were not phased at all by this and just carried on through the debris!). Their performance was quite stunning. Very big smiles from Ainslie, Sarah and Jane and much appreciation was shown from those watching.
